Wisdom. Most of us need more. When we understand our lack, we can ask God for His provision. And when we do, He gives it. This aspect of relying on God's wisdom is especially important since we live in a shame-based culture. Control is maintained by creating a sense that if you don't conform to social norms, you are not acceptable. The world wants us to live up to the image of what the world thinks is socially acceptable. When this happens, social acceptance becomes the main cultural value. The fear of rejection and being ostracized is a powerful motivator. I love to pray for my children using Stormie Omartian's book, Praying for Your Adult Children. Today's section is about asking God for wisdom. I thought it appropriate to share a section here from Pages 68 - 69.
Four Reasons to Ask God for Revelation
1. Revelation from God to our hearts gives us a vision for our lives. This doesn't mean we know every detail, but we do know we have a future and that it is good. Proverbs 29:18 (NKJV) says, "Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but happy is he who keeps the law." It helps if we have wisdom and insight from God so we can see the big picture.
2. Revelation from God means He opens our eyes and gives us understanding and enlightenment about our purpose and calling. Paul prayed Ephesians 1:17-19 (NKJV) for the church at Ephesus, "That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, that the eyes of your understanding would be enlightened," so that they could know "what is the hope of His calling," and "what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe." We must pray for ourselves to have revelation and our children. Enough said.
3. Revelation from God helps us make a right response -- a response we would not have known to make without it -- that will keep us from destroying ourselves. We need revelation to help us make decisions, as do our children. Only a word from God in our and their hearts can get them moving into their destiny. Revelation changes everything. "A man who wanders from the way of understanding will rest in the assembly of the dead" (Proverbs 21:16. NKJV).
4. Revelation from God means that He reveals who He is to us. Jesus said to His disciples, "… no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal to Him" Luke 10:22 (NKJV). God gives us revelation about Himself when we need it. God will do the same for our children about who He is, too. Any revelation we get about who God is comes because Jesus wills to reveal Himself to us.
Pray for yourself - to receive godly wisdom, discernment and revelation. Pray for your children's hearts to desire these same gifts for themselves: godly wisdom, discernment and revelation. These are beautiful and practical gifts from God that are life changing and will benefit us and our loved ones every day of our lives.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction" (Proverbs 1:7, NKJV).
A Prayer for Our Children:
Lord, I pray that ____________will have wisdom that comes through your Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:8). Help ___________to be strong, refusing to fall into the ways of the foolish. Help __________to have the wisdom to never blaspheme Your name. Bring strong conviction into _____________heart whenever ______________is tempted. I pray they will "let the high praises of God" be in their mouth and a "two-edged sword" in their hand (Psalm 149:6). Lord, you have said that is we lack wisdom, we are to ask for it and You will give it to us (James 1:5). I come to you asking that you would pour out Your Spirit of wisdom upon us. Give us wisdom to always speak the right word to others, to seek godly and wise counsel, to be humble and not prideful, and not be drawn toward the wisdom of the world.
"The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death." Proverbs 13:14
Lord, I pray that we would become filled with Your wisdom and hear the truth and know it. I pray for a fear of the Lord, a reverence for you (Proverbs 2:3, 5). Give us wisdom in all things, so we will be shaped by Your hand, not the world. I pray for the ability for us to discern from good and evil. Help us discern between holy and unholy, clean and unclean, right and wrong. Give us insight into people and situations, enabling us to see what we would otherwise not be able to see. Help us discern the true character of every person. Help us see the things that can only be spiritually discerned.
"The foolishness of a man twists his way, and his heart frets against the Lord." Proverbs 19:3
Lord, give us revelation for our lives. Let us be guided by revelation in all we do. Give us revelation for our lives that fills us with a vision for our lives. Open our eyes to what Your calling and purpose is for us. Thank You for the revelation You give, Your peace that passes understanding and clarifying our future focus. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
"Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, O Lord. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy." Habakkuk 3:2
