Philippians 1:27, 2:14-16 NIV – Whatever happens, conduct yourself in a manner worthy of the gospel.
It is a great challenge for a job candidate to find ways to stand out to potential employers. There is so much pressure to find the perfect job – or any job – that even the inclusion or omission of a single phrase can make the difference between first look or being lost in a pile. Cover letters, colored papers, clothes, and college degrees. The search is on to find the right combination to stand out above all other job applicants and gain the edge that gets the job.
Paul understood the potential opportunities for those who could find a way to stand out, and he knew the secret of doing just that. For Paul, it was vital that he and his partners stand out for Christ in a special way in their towns and communities. Standing out in the right way equaled a greater opportunity to share and spread the gospel through integrity and earned respect. Paul encouraged believers to be anything but normal in a depraved and crooked generation. He exhorted them not to fit in. “Conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel.” Be kind. Be positive. Be above reproach. Despite all the challenges you face to your pride and patience, always remember the gospel you stand for.
Are there little complaints and arguments you can just keep to yourself today? It may make a difference in someone else’s eternity.
