Mark demands details. Jennifer seems passive. Susan’s desk is never clean. Isn’t it funny how we notice these things about people but never think about why they do the things they do?

God has certainly created us uniquely in His image. Some of us are organized, and some still can’t find that report from two years ago. Maybe you find yourself at the center of the conversation, or perhaps you’re observing from afar. Our personality traits and behaviors affect our daily lives and how we communicate and interact with those around us.

So, if everyone is born with varying natural tendencies, how can we learn how to communicate well with each other?

Many tools help guide the process of understanding ourselves more; one of them is DISC. The DISC model of human behavior uses four categories to illustrate patterns: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness.

Tips to Remember

Communicating with others is a vital part of life regardless of your natural tendencies. Here are some tips for communicating well with all four personality styles:

High D’s: Here, you’ll find your problem-solvers and decision-makers. Naturally, they enjoy challenges, independence, and results. When communicating with D’s:

  • Stick to the big picture
  • Keep it brief and to the point
  • Let them take the lead and maintain control if possible

High I’s: Being an ‘I’ is all about relationships. Social environments provide the right setting for their friendly freedom of expression. When communicating with I’s:

  • Keep conversation relaxed and calm
  • Give verbal approval
  • Help them transfer talk into an action plan

High S’s: Those with this style are calm and consistent with an easygoing mentality. They are ready to help and value sincere appreciation. When communicating with S’s:

  • Make allowances for family or team
  • Allow them time to process information and adjust to change
  • Provide hands-on reinforcement and genuine thanks

High C’s: Organization and clarified focus is the driving force behind this style. They are careful thinkers who value accuracy and quality. When communicating with C’s:

  • Be specific and clear with instruction
  • Provide examples and step-by-step guides
  • Remain tactful and be patient since C’s need some time to process
