Coaching Question: What in the world holds you back from experiencing the abundant life that Jesus died to give you? The reactions of people around you? Words spoken to you that you give power to define who you think you are? Comparisons? Jealousy? Envy? These all have one thing in common…other people. People are everywhere you go and Satan is always after division in relationships which is why he uses people to toss you into a mental swirl. Once again, who can save us? Thanks be to God through Jesus we can gain victory, one thought at a time.

“Who is it that conquers the world but the one that believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” 1 John 5:5

The most amazing thing to remember as you read through the Gospel of John and his 3 letters, along with the book of Revelation is this simple truth: John walked with Jesus, talked with Him, hugged Him, witnessed first-hand miracle after miracle. He is an eye witness of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords as He walked this earth…WOW. All the more let us lean into every word he has recorded about his personal account of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection.

John uses a word repeatedly throughout John 15 and all 5 chapters of his 1 letter: Abide. He shares Jesus’ words and invitation to abide in Him and THEN we will be able to produce much fruit in our relationships, apart from Him we can do nothing. Approximately 10 times in John 15 and 15 times throughout the five chapters of 1 John.

Along with the 7 references in John’s first letter to believe in the Son of God and the 15 times he references abiding in Him along with an invitation to receive Jesus’ anointing, we have the perfect formula for how to conquer the world: Believe, Abide, Receive. Believe in Jesus, abide in Him as the word made flesh and ask for and receive the power of His anointing of the Holy Spirit to teach us ALL things…including how to be emotionally intelligent in Him and take back the power we give to people and circumstance to define our sense of safety, success and purpose.

Take Action:

Take a moment to reflect on the following five scriptures/quotes. Write down on an index card the verse or phrase that speaks to you and carry it with you this week. Between transitions pause, read the message and pray it into your heart. Allow the message to flow into your behaviors:

  1. “And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. All who obey his commandments abide in Him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.” 1 John 3:23-24
  2. “As for you, the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and so you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie and just as it has taught you, abide in him.” 1 John 26-27
  3. “The way to be truly happy is to be truly human, and the way to be truly human is to be truly godly.I. Packer
  4. The world looks for happiness through self-assertion. The Christian knows that joy is found in self-abandonment. “If a man will let himself be lost for My sake,” Jesus said, “he will find his true self.” Elisabeth Elliot
  5. “The joy of the Lord is your strength.Nehemiah 8:10

What is the Holy Spirit moving you to hold on to? What is He asking you to release? Make more room in your life to abide in Jesus’ love for you. You are a leader anytime you are in a position to influence another human being. When Jesus sits on the throne of your thoughts, behaviors and decisions you are able to conquer the voices of defeat, victimization and fear and accomplish His will for your life. “The power that works within you is able to accomplish abundantly more than you could ever ask or imagine.” Ephesians 3:20
