Imprisoned by Herod, Peter had no way, humanly-speaking, to alter his circumstances. He was at the mercy of a tyrant who had already gained popularity by executing James, the brother of John, and was now looking to enhance his popularity by putting Peter on trial. Every indication pointed to a similar fate for Peter. “But the church was earnestly praying,” seeking God’s intervention on Peter’s behalf. They knew that ultimate authority rested not with Herod, but with God. What desperate need are you bringing before God, asking for His intervention?

So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.—Acts 12:5

Prayer: O God, sometimes we face desperate situations in our lives or in the lives of others. At these times, it is good to remember that You are the one in control. Thank You that no situation is beyond Your reach. Move on our behalf, we ask in Jesus’ name, amen.
