When we center our lives on fulfilling our own needs, we lose sight of others, and of God. Like the Israelites, we begin to take credit for meeting our needs in our own strength, and we freely accept the credit for any success that comes our way. In contrast, when our hope and trust are centered in God, we see today in light of eternity, people in light of God’s love, success in light of God’s purpose.
But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today. —Deuteronomy 8:18
Prayer: Lord, Moses’ challenge to the Israelites is a timeless message, one that I need to hear today. Whether my day holds challenge or success, let me meet each one in the humility and confidence that comes from knowing who You are, and who I am in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
